Maternal Newborn Care

Maternal Newborn Care Section Chief Dr. Norma Spence

Section Chief: Dr. Norma Spence

The Maternal Newborn program of the Department of Family Medicine is an active division of over 135 physicians.

These physicians provide up to 50% of initial prenatal care, and are responsible for up to 40% of the deliveries in the Calgary Zone. We work within a dynamic multidisciplinary care model with close interaction with our obstetrical, anaesthesia, nurse and midwife colleagues. We are passionate about providing comprehensive, quality intrapartum care in a supportive environment.

All four adult hospitals provide antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care – Foothills Medical Center, Peter Lougheed Center and Rockyview Hospital and South Health Campus.

There are many models to incorporate obstetrical care into your practice:
• Low Risk Clinics - provision of antenatal care at independent clinics and shift based hospital care.
• As Part of Family Practice - provision of antenatal care as practice and join into call groups of varying sizes and patient volumes.
• As part of a Primary Care Network - provision of other new and innovative models are constantly emerging.
• Physician Extender Shifts - available at some of the hospitals, allowing family physicians to provide care assisting the specialist obstetrician in outpatient, emergency and postpartum assessments as well as intrapartum care.
