Program Description

The University of Calgary CFPC-EM program adheres to the standards and objectives of the CFPC, as outlined in the "Red Book".  The Residents receive training at the Foothills Medical Centre, Peter Lougheed Medical Centre, Rockyview Hospital, South Health Campus, and the Alberta Children's Hospital. There is also a rural rotation at the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital.


Timeline

Residents complete 1 year of training consisting of the following rotations:

  • Adult Emergency Medicine - total of 4 blocks
  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine - total of 2 blocks
  • Rural Emergency Medicine - 0.75 block
  • Coronary Care Unit - 1 block
  • Intensive Care Unit - 1.5 blocks
  • Anesthesia - 1 block
  • Toxicology - 0.5 block
  • Elective - 1 block
  • Ophthalmology – 0.25 blocks
  • Community rotations in Yellowknife, Lethbridge, and Red Deer

Research and Presentations

Each resident is required to complete a scholarly project over the course of the year. Residents are expected to present at Emergency Medicine Research Day in the Spring. Each resident will present at Journal Club once and will have one Grand Rounds, one EKG/Lab or Interesting Case presentation, and one Pediatric Grand Rounds. In addition, residents are expected to do multiple presentations at Academic Full Day.


Evaluation

Residents are evaluated by the following means:

  • Clinical rotation evaluations (at the end of each clinical rotation)
  • Daily Evaluations during Emergency blocks
  • Quarterly oral exams
  • Bi-annual written exams
  • Quarterly meetings
  • Horizontal preceptor/mentor feedback
  • Resident Research Day, presentations and adjudication of scholarly projects
  • Grand Rounds, EKG/Lab Rounds presentation evaluations
  • Academic Full Day presentation evaluations
