Internal Medicine Rotation - 4 Weeks

Objectives:

  1. Develops a systematic, orderly and timely approach to the investigation of the medical patient, particularly distinguishing the seriously ill from those with minor conditions. (Can-Meds: Medical expert, health advocate, communicator, scholar)
  2. Demonstrates skilled interviewing and physical examination techniques in gathering clinical data, recognizing the need to collect collateral information where appropriate. (Can-Meds: Medical expert, communicator, scholar)
  3. Formulates a differential diagnosis that includes the most likely diagnosis, a hierarchy of likely alternatives, and the most serious or life-threatening possibilities. (Can-Meds: Medical expert)
  4. Recommends investigations within the context of the medical evidence, considering benefits, risks, patient/family preferences and resources. (Can-Meds: Medical expert, health advocate, communicator, scholar)
  5. Recommends treatment options that are most appropriate based on the medical evidence, considering benefits, risks, patient/family preferences and resources. (Can-Meds: Medical expert, health advocate, communicator, scholar)
  6. Demonstrates procedural skills as appropriate for level of training. (Can-Meds: Medical expert)
  7. Communicates effectively with patients and their families and adapts to communication challenges (delivering bad news, crisis situations, language barriers, etc). (Can-Meds: communicator)
  8. Appropriately interacts with other physicians and allied health professionals, either as a member of the team or as a team lead. (Can-Meds: communicator, leader, collaborator)
  9. Devises an appropriate discharge plan, including medical follow up, and provide discharge teaching to patient (and family members, when applicable), and a detailed discharge summary prepared in a timely manner, and sent to all appropriate professionals and individuals involved in the patient’s follow up care.   10. Maintains clear, accurate and appropriate records of clinical encounters, investigation orders and management plans. (Can-Meds: Medical expert, communicator)
